**COMPACT LIVING: Floating Desk..**

Akhira N. Ismail

image

image

Walking into the Architectural Digest Home Show,  the first booth I saw became the inspiration for another Compact Living article. Designer David Rassmussen has handcrafted floating shelves and wall consoles that are perfect for a small living space.  Although the words, shelves and consoles are simple terms that don’t need any explanation,  my thought for these shelves/ consoles was not as predictable.  What I saw was - If you smack a chair right in front of these floating consoles or shelves, you have a desk.image

Why? Well that’s easy.  First,it floats on wall and doesn’t take up square footage.  Secondly, it has deep drawers which can store more than three sheets of paper unlike the modern Parsons desk.   Finally, the walnut wood, modern round rectangular shape and simplistic touch of color just made it plain ole gorgeous.   Oh, p.s it come in 3 different sizes -small, medium and large.  So for all my tiny living people including my self, this floating shelf, console, or desk could bring more space into your tiny office space. This is my style decor, See if its yours, Go and Explore…….  See specs below.

**Nothing But a WINNER Here- Rugs that is **

Akhira N. Ismail

image

Most people don’t understand why rugs cost so much. You know the ones you really like, with perfect color and design. Then, you pass out from the price.  Well the answer is simply “QUALITY”!  It is the quality of the rug that determines the price.   Quality- made from silk or wool and is used with words like hand knotted and hand tufted.   You will under stand quality when you just see or step on one of UK designer Sonya Winner rugs.  The softness feels like a down blanket on under your feet infused with color.   Yes, I know you’re saying ( you saw and felt that before from a new rug or wall-to-wall carpeting), but I’m here to tell you that you haven’t.  This is not some cheap rug with a beautiful design that shed all over your room until it gets a hole in it ( come from experience).  Sonya Winner’s rugs are not just quality, its amazing design, color, style and artistry.

image

Sonya has created a style where she can layer colors and dimensions on a rug.  Her color palate is compared to some of the great artist like Matisse.  Although, for me, its reminds me of great graffiti artist like Saberone.   Her amazing artistry and indelible quality will define this  generation as Mozart distinguish great classical music in the 18th century.

image

image

How can one designer embody all these qualities?  Well I don’t know, maybe her mother gave birth to her in designer paint, while reading about Michelangelo, listening to jazz, and smoking a little kush for the pain. However, no matter how she got here I’m glad she is here. She is using her talent to infuse a kaleidoscope of colors and imagination right under your feet. If you ever have the pleasure of purchasing or checking out her rugs, you have definitely got a WINNER..(couldn’t help using the cliché of her name).

A one two, a one two- Is something you normally say when you are testing a microphone.  However, I was saying this to my new favorite  lighting in the Architectural Digest home show.  Designer Donna Brady husband needed lighting for his recording studio and while watching a boxing match she had an “aaaahhh hhhaaaaa” moment.  Her spark of genius was when the microphone came down to the announcer an introduced the fighters.  Yes it’s a microphone pendant.  It hangs  from the ceiling. Its super easy to put up and just blasting with light.  This is such a menswear idea for the home or for man’s cave in your life.  But for the little tomboy in each girl it is the drop of testosterone to bring to any girly room.

image

Now this designer is not just known for this microphone lighting.  Her company: Re-surface out of Brooklyn has other graphic lighting that encompass the city it born out of.  As a new Brooklynite, its lovely to see local companies kicking out some hotness. Magnetic Spirit

IQ Lifestyle Collection

Am I the only one that’s tired of the floating shelves that really don’t float?

It’s either slightly tilted to the side or sinking to the floor because they just don’t sit on the hardware properly.   Have you also suffered a mini heart attack in the middle night because the  alleged thief that broke through your door was just your flimsy floating shelves crashing to the floor. Although I love the look of it, floating shelves have become a trend that not everyone could pull off and I’m one them.

So, I’m ecstatic to give you the remedy to flimsy floating shelves dilemma- Magnetics! Yes, I said magnetics. Something so simple that I wish I would have though of it my self.   However there are two companies who have the same idea but executed in two different versions.

1.     Out of France: Magnetic Spirit

Magnetic Spirit is a magnetic floating modular shelving system, which gives you the freedom to rearrange and your wall without the many holes. First you attach the magnetic panel to wall.  Second, you place the recycled steel lacquer modular boxes on the wall and  arrange in any pattern you desire.  It comes in different sizes and shape for you to design to your own specifications.     These panels and boxes come in three majors color: white, black, and warm grey.   However, if you are a color addict like my self the boxes can be covered with colorful or pattern skins.   FYI, each box can hold up to 16 kilos, which translate in American as 35 pounds.

2.     Out of Great Britian: IQ Lifestyle Collection

image

IQ Lifestyle Collection is a magnetic wooden floating shelves which would give you the floating  look without the permanent hardware.  First, you attached the faux leather or color magnetic panel to the wall.  Second, you place the wooden floating shelves in any arrangement  you desire.  These shelves have 4 finished natural, dark stained wood, gloss white, and gloss black.  The metal panel has multiple color choice from ivory to lime green.  Each shelf can maintain a weight load of 10 kilos which translate in American to 22 lbs.

One thing you don’t have to do worry about, are these shelves sliding the wall like the weak refrigerator magnetic. They are specifically made for you heavy coffee books and multiple layers of stuff. So instead of me avoiding the floating trend, I am the trend magnetic.  This is my style decor, See if its your Go and Explore…… See specs below.

**BOW TO ROYALITY**

Akhira N. Ismail

Royal Mahuida Invitation from great things to people on Vimeo.

When nature inspires it can be pretty impressive.  It opens the door to some the best creative expressions.  These bits of inspiration stand out among the rest. In the forest of pottery and different vessel created from a spinning wheel and a hot kiln- Royal Mahuida definitely stand tall like royalty.

 image

This Chilean design studio GT2P (great things to people) is the reason these artifacts exist.  There creation process is a long explanation of experimenting with integrated technology and new material etc, etc.  In short, they create the unexpected.  Although using nature, history, and technology is not so unexpected but the result of it is.

image

When you combine geometric design of the Araucaria Chilean tree, jewels of the Inca Empire, bronze metal and digital crafting -you get the Royal Mahuida. This majestic collection ranges from a coffee cup to a wine decanter.  It can upgrade your classic table to royal setting worthy of the Queen.  It is the unexpected shapes of Royal Mahuida that makes you feel like you can have your own piece of history.  Now, “Bow to royalty you insolent fool”…(that’s taking it a little over board but you get the picture)…   This is my style décor, See if it yours, Go Explore.  See specs below…..

Walking in Anthropologie in Soho London I was in awe of the huge ceiling to floor wall of lushes green plants. This luscious jungle was scaling up the wall and it looked amazing.  I kept saying how did they do that.  They brought the outdoors indoor literally.  So I was on the hunt to find out how did they do it and who?

So here it is company Biotecture has creating eco system scaling up the walls.

-Biotecture Ltd is dedicated to designing and implementing sustainable green/living walls for buildings and the built environment.  Plants are pre-grown vertically in a unique, patented, modular hydroponic system, designed to deliver precise, low water usage and low maintence.

 image

How did they do this? First, they created a plan for the space. Next, they chose the perfect plants that create a color and a design balance for the wall. Then, they implemented it to the wall.  Finally, it creates a living wall dream.

image

Biotecture walls are yet really for the home market but it definitely can great a green environment in your commercial space. I can imagine these walls on the high traffic streets in New York.  I also can see this incorporate in many outdoor space within restaurants and retail spaces.  This is the great green thumb for the brick and mortar business and green architecture.  Go crazy make a jungle in your business.  Please beware this does not exclude the occasional bugs or bird nest.  This is my style décor, See if it yours, Go Explore.  See specs below…..

Compact Living: Seating for 4 goes to 8

Akhira N. Ismail

Ready for the Holidays? I’m ready! I’m ready for the laughter, wine, and holiday dinners. But what I’m not ready for are cramped NYC holiday dinners around a small table which includes knee knocking the next guest and your elbow resting in someone else plate.  I don’t care how nice the table setting is being that close is just plain uncomfortable.   However, friends endure this torture because we love that person and most of time the wine make it bearable.  So to my Compact living people, here is the solution for your cramp dinner table:  Matthew Bridges design.
This London company created a table and chair for your holiday pleasure.  Seers table and the Vincent and Vera chairs are convertible furniture that allow you expand your guest capacity.
The Seer tables increases size with  center button and a turn. This reveals the table leaf that takes your table of 4 to a table of 8.

The Vincent/Vera chair is one chair that separates into two and come back together seamlessly.  This allows your4 chairs to separate and seat 8 perfectly for your Seer table.

Hurricane Sandy needed a Vacation: **Seora Crystal**

Akhira N. Ismail

Now as I said: Hurricane Sandy really had me thinking about a vacation in warm sunny island next to the Caribbean Sea.

So right now I imagine:

I am on the beach in Jamaica with the sun browning my skin.  I have a plate of fruit  and coconut concoction cocktail made to make me smile while im saying “mmmmmm”.   All of this happening as I swaying next to the sea water in my Seora Luxury Crystal Hammock.

Yep, inspired by Miami, designed from an Italian, and made in the UK is Seora Luxury Hammock.  If you are used to the fabric or net taught hammock than designer Anthony Logothetis changed this aged old idea by adding structure.  These all-weatherproof luxury hammocks are created to make sure you can relax with comfort. The skeleton structured is ergonomically arranged to support your back and natural body positions.

This hammock comes in 4 different colors and 2 materials, Gurjan marine plywood and/or poly carbonate.  For added manageability it can be easily broken down and stored in any shed or however you store your pool, beach, or yacht accessories.  However, my favorite is there new the Luxury Crystal because it looks I’m laying on diamonds and it sooooo compliments my skin.   So Seora, thanks for giving my mental vacation. * Hurricane Sandy needed Love.. Answer: STACK*

Akhira N. Ismail

So I am one of the thousands that have been affected by Hurricane Sandy.  I was without electricity for 13 days and the only thing I thought about is heat and a sunny vacation.  So it is very likely that I will talk to you about heating systems.  One thing I wished I had installed in my home is a wood burning stove.   Why, because you don’t need electricity or gas to heat it. It’s the burning wood or pellets that conducts the heat and depending on the unit you can cook on the top of it.  However, the wood-burning stove has not been updated for a century. Some have tried by repainting it or kind of reshaping it. . However none have succeeded to change the shape and efficiency like Stack.

Stack is the collaboration of the Italian dynamic duo  La Castellamonte and Adriano Design. These award winning companies are known to redefine and transforming the archaic and modernized it. They choose to tackle this brontosaurus heating system and bringing it to the 21st century.

They reinterpreted the ancient ceramic stove with a contemporary shape. They used clay to sculpted the tubular and square shape and the stacks to increase the size. Depending on the size of the room, the higher the stack which creates more heat. In addition, it updated it with the newest housing requirements and low environmental impact.   All of these details together gave birth to this modern heating system- Stack.    Stack is just what Hurricane Sandy needed, a warm hug.  Baci....… See specs below.

*Revival Of the Retired Leather Belt*

Akhira N. Ismail

image

My father’s belt was a  2" inch tanned cow hide strap with a silver nickel buckle.  This belt was used to hold up his pants and also as corporal punishment for disobedience or disrespect for my seven brothers and sisters.  We all had frequents meeting with this cowhide on our hides to keep all of us in line.  However, the new 21th century parents with the timeout corners and rewards for listening, have retired these leather belts to vintage shops for a couple of dollars.  One mans trash as become London’s company Ting treasure.

image

Ting gave these retired belts there next phase of life- flooring.  They re-purpose them by staining and lining them to resemble floorboards.  Genius!   Ive seen leather tile on the floor but leather belts, the etching alone gives these panels a rich vintage decorative luxurious quality that is recyclable.  Not only are they shown on the floor but also used as wainscoting on the wall and doors.  It brings a masculine menswear styling to flooring.  I don’t have anymore adjective to describe it. Just note, that Ting just changed my childhood memory from a leather punishment to a flooring reward.  Sweet, check them out.  See specs below….

* Its not Feathers, Its Plumes!*

Akhira N. Ismail

Trend Alert: Feather lighting ( yes actually feathers)… Something I saw a lot of while in London Design Week.  However, there was one company that stood out in front of the rest and that’s Pluma Cubic.   Berlin designer Heike Buchfelder exhibited her sultry red feather pendants in Tent London.  These huge pendants were perched to the ceiling and created a red glow that easily turned the industrial space of Tent to a seductive nightclub.

Heike utilized something the average butcher would depose of feathers.  Then transformed these beautiful plumes to light our inner space.  This is not as easy and collecting falling pigeon feather and creating a light.  And please don’t go plucking feather off your canary leave it to the professionals.  Heike (the professional) handpicks 2000- 4000 goose or rooster feather to create these pendants.

Not only are there 2000-4000 feathers to create one lamp but, ALL the feathers must look like. Now that some detail! Due to the strength of the horn in the feather, it makes these light features very durable. Like the Native American feather ornaments, these feather fixtures can last centuries.   The one thing that I asked her that was very important to me was “ How do you clean it”?  Her answer was simple, “lightly with a Hoover”.  It’s the simplicity in things that allow people to create the amazing.  Heike was able to do that- by capturing the amazing in nature and allowing its light to glow.   See specs below….

**Yo!, IM HOME**

Akhira N. Ismail

HOW!  No, this isn’t the American Indian satire form of hello used in corny early western films.  This is the 3-letter word that inspired innovator Simone Woodroffe to create the fast moving sushi-YO! Sushi, and creative capsule hotel of YO! Hotel.  It will be this magical word that allowed him to address the concern of the ever so decreasing size of living space with his creation of YO! Home.

YO! Home sandwiches the innovation of stage design and interior comforts to maximize your living space.  HOW” did they do this?  Well, by using moving mechanics in unexpected places like the ceiling, inside walls, under floor to enclose everything you need.  Sound interesting because it is.

Inside the 2012 YO! Home prototype at London’s 100% Design; the bedroom lifts up and reveals a sunken living room with a hidden storage. The cinema screen drops from the ceiling. The office desk transforms into a guest bed and slides out a pocket wall for added privacy.  The bathroom shower reveals a sunken hot tub.  In addition, the kitchen opens up behind sliding doors and wheels out an island… Heeewwww, that was a mouth full for 80m flat (American translation that’s about 850 sqft apartment) but its doooopppe!

Woodrofe expects YO! Home to be the new affordable urban living for the working class. HOWever, I still have my eyebrow raised on whether this prototype will actually hit the market. Would it really be affordable? Could it adapt to smaller spaces?   Then again, with Woodrofe and  the Yo Team will power and persistence this could be coming to a condo building near you next week.  Yet, it’s this type of inspiring innovation that seats Woodroffe next to Steve Jobs and Charles Bronson.  Its “ HOW” genius is revealed by answering one question.  And its these words” YO IM HOME”, that could transform the way we live …

Im International Baby: 100% Design and Tent London welcomes "Daily of Dose of Decor"

Akhira N. Ismail

What would take me out of NYC to purchase a last minute 7 hour flight to London?  Answer: interiors, architecture, furniture design, new talent, new ideas and a press pass for 2 major interior architecture design show. :)…
I was honored to be requested and listed as press for 100% Design and Tent London.  These two design shows set the bar for innovation and just raw talent.  Walking into these shows you can feel the creativity buzzing off the walls.  Whether it was the hallway light show of 100% Design or the raw industrial space of Tent London, each show set the stage for a blast of great design.
It felt good to be in a innovative and creative environment.  There were so many companies from established brands to emerging designers.  Each of them displayed a passion for there product and  had a story about the creation of there work.  You can feel the trends around the corner, like the reemerging of gold in lighting and accessories, geometric shapes in chairs, printed tile, and innovation of small spaces. You will also see the differences in the country influences from Norway, to France, to Argentina..
Some of designers were very surprised that I flew from New York to London just to check out the show but they were  happy I did and eager for me to write about them.  In addition, they loved my business card ..“ thank you Moo”. What they didn’t know is that I live for this type of stuff.  I am a design addict.  I love to showcase new designers and product especially in decor. . It give my readers new information that they didn’t have before. In addition, its creates a platform for the designer to promote and sell to a global audience.  As a bonus, it awaken the creative and  entrepreneur spirit which is priceless.  Im excited about this season of new articles and product to show you. So follow me into the world of decor exploring one  country at time.
PS: I was very happy to hear that some of the designers had viewed by blog many times and have it listed in there favorites , Im international!! …yeeaaahhhh :)
